After being a no-show among fests in 2018, it looks like Joe Berlinger‘s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile is poised for a Park City showcase. The project was introduced to buyers in Cannes back in 2017 with Zac Efron being pitched as Ted Bundy, and production began in January this year with quite the cast in: Lily Collins, Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, Jim Parsons, Jeffrey Donovan, Angela Sarafyan, Brian Geraghty, Dylan Baker. IndieWIRE profiled the production — reminding us that Berlinger has been working in what folks deem monsters as far back as Brother’s Keeper back in ’92.
Gist: Told through the perspective of Elizabeth Kloepfer (Collins), Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, who went years denying the accusations against Bundy but ultimately turned him in to the police. Only nearing his execution, when Bundy began talking about his extensive and heinous murders, did Kloepfer, and the rest of the world, learn the true scope of his numerous and grisly crimes.
Production Co./Producers: Nicolas Chartier (Eve), Michael Costigan (Woodshock), Ara Keshishian (November Criminals), Michael Simkin (Dirty Grandpa)
Prediction: Premiere section.
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available. TBD (domestic). TBD (international).
