We have the exclusive first look at the poster one sheet for Mark Jackson‘s award-winning This Teacher — a Grand Jury prize winner at LAFF, BFI London selection and 2019 Slamdance Film Festival closing film. In a role that was written for actress Hafsia Herzi (previously seen in Jackson’s sophomore feature (2014’s War Story) as well as three of Bertrand Bonello’s House of Tolerance and three films signed by Abdellatif Kechiche), this sees a Muslim woman’s vacation to New York devolve into a nightmare.

Following 2011’s Without and War Story (which stars Catherine Keener and was shot by cinematographer Reed Morano who executive produces this film), his third feature could be coined as an island trilogy of isolation and paranoia. With a certain angst, a quasi spiritual or religious trance core and intertwined with thriller genre elements, This Teacher reminds us of a certain Antonioni-esque aestheticism that Jackson favors and, this could be a cousin to Amat Escalante’s The Untamed which also features hard to explain backwoods forces. In an antagonistic America, Jackson tests the boundaries of faith, old and new relationships and muse Herzi is a standout as an allegorical ticking time bomb. Don’t miss this piece of American indie film in 2019. Here is the poster premiere and Slamdance screening times.
