Weinstein saves ‘Act’ for last

Known for his aggressive buying tactics – The Weinstein Co. co-head Harvey Weinstein locked up the rights to Gillian Armstrong's fictionalized Harry Houdini biopic during the final hours of the American Film Market. Variety reports that the film should preem at the Festival de Cannes in May and hit theatres in fall of 2007.

McQuarrie takes part in ‘Stanford’ study

It has been a while since we last heard of writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, his directorial debut Artisan’s Way of the Gun was a fun little romp best enjoyed when not taken seriously and his claim to fame is of coursehaving scribed the cult fav. The Usual Suspects. Finally after a couple of years of invovlement, Variety annouced that Maverick Films has set him to direct his second feature with an April start date. Maverick's Mark Morgan and Brent Emery will produce with McQuarrie. Guy Oseary and Tara Pirria are exec producers.

Interview: Pedro Almodóvar

Pedro Almodovar has done it again. His most latest oeuvre Volver has conquered the soul of moviegoers and critics alike, as it happened before with cinema darlings Talk to Her and All About My Mother, among others. As usual, he opened in Spain in the early spring and he started collecting awards all over the world. Landing in American theaters in November it’s also part of the ritual: oscar season is up and running and once again, Almodovar and his movie are strong contenders for nominations. This 57 year-old Spanish director is among the few foreigners that has not only won (All About My Mother) and been nominated (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) for the Oscar in the foreign language feature category but has also been a contender (and a winner) for best screenwriter and director for Talk to Her.

Genuine Fake: ‘Dali and I’ Heading to Film

Sometimes a genuine life really does imitate art. But then again, who’s to say that the art is genuine either? Academy Award nominee Andrew Niccol has been tapped by Room 9 Entertainment to adapt and direct Stan Lauryssens' eclectic biography of Salvador Dali entitled Dali & I: The Surreal Story. Niccol is developing the script, originally penned by John Salvati, into his trademark style. In Niccol’s previous scripts the individual loses their grip on reality and becomes the victim of their own demons and fantasies. In the case of Salvador Dali, Niccol’s need only capture the true life onto film stock.

Trio takes stroll in ‘Park’

Keri Russell, Alessandro Nivola and Elias Koteas have reportedly signed on to join Sigourney Weaver and Kate Bosworth in playwright David Auburn’s psychological thriller The Girl In The Park. Auburn, who penned the script, is best known for his 2000 play “Proof” which garnered the Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama, both in 2001. Most recently the playwright penned the Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock flick “The Lake House”.
