Video Interview: Janicza Bravo – Zola

Date:

We could label Janicza Bravo‘s sophomore feature as a road-trip misadventure and about getting a raw deal in a set number of twitter character space, but deep down its about the deconstruction of the incidental, shaping the narrative and about negotiating the terms in real time. Three years after premiering Lemon at the Sundance Film Festival, Bravo returns with Zola – A24’s first superhero film where a stripper outplays, outthinks, and outwits the overlords and the powers that be. I had the chance to sit down with the filmmaker and discuss how she worked at adapting the material, the creative use of narration, the use of sound, and creating a character who is we could relate as a power broker in her own right. Zola lands in theatres today.
