Basic Instincts: Rebecca Zlotowski’s Moving into Erotic Thriller Terrain

In heavy press mode commencing first at the Venice Film Festival moving to the French media outlets for the France domestic release and finally the Toronto (international) premiere, French filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski‘s Les Enfants des autres (Other People’s Children) is, alongside Hansen-Løve’s One Fine Morning, one of the finer light dramas of 2022. IONCINEMA got to sit down with this splendid personality and while we tried to get further details on Audrey Diwan’s next film project Emmanuelle (Zlotowski is the co-scribe and was naturally mum) she did reveal what direction she is moving into with her next project. Zlotowski is currently writing what might become her next feature film – one that delves into the erotic thriller genre touching upon themes of femininity, desire and voyeurism. Perhaps she’ll re-team with a Virginie Efira or Léa Seydoux? She also has a drama in the works.

Since her debut feature 2010 debut in the Critics’ Week selected Belle Épine (Dear Prudence), Zlotowski is on a new feature film every three years type of pace, so it’s not impossible that she’ll piece together for a 2024 shoot and 2025 premiere. Worth noting she directed a half dozen episodes for “Savages” in 2019 (where she found her Roschdy Zem – also in Les Enfants des autres). We can’t wait for this next effort!
