We Had a Pope!: Ruffalo Confirmed for Bonello’s Vatican Thriller ‘Santo Subito!’

Date:

Back in June we jumped on the news that Bertrand Bonello was potentially setting up shop for the curious sound project Santo Subito! and then out of the blue Mark Ruffalo mentioned that he was joining the auteur…. now the project has taken a major leap forward: Variety confirms that Ruffalo is indeed toplining with production kicking off this March. Looks like we can start looking ahead into Cannes 2027 as a possible return to the comp section for this auteur. With the evolvement of scribe Thomas Bidegain, Bonello might be blending his distinctive style for a broader aud. Producers include Playtime’s Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, Mandarin & Compagnie’s Eric Altmayer, Indiana Production’s Fabrizio Donvito & Marco Cohen and Madants’ Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska. Naturally cinematographer Josée Deshaies is handling the look of the film. Look for more casting news shortly.

The Vatican-set thriller based on a true story is about Father Joseph Murolo (Ruffalo), an American-born priest summoned by the Vatican to serve as the “devil’s advocate” in the investigation of Pope John Paul II’s life and potential path to sainthood. Set after the pontiff’s death on April 2, 2005, the film follows Murolo as he interviews confidantes and witnesses, navigating a “moral labyrinth” that ultimately puts his own faith to the test.
