Kahlil Joseph, Robert Eggers, Patrick Brice & Celia Rowlson-Hall Part of Inaugural MEMORY Presents: Program #1

Indie producers Riel Roch Decter and Sebastian Pardo’s prod company label MEMORY is sprouting a new branch in the shape of a curated traveling short film series. Taking place in Toronto during TIFF on September 12th, the inaugural card for MEMORY Presents is a talent heavy who’s who of upcoming helmers that we’ve seen, and/or will be seeing at major fests such as Sundance, SXSW, Cannes and Venice/TIFF. The 90-minute-ish program will include world premiere showings from Robert EggersKahlil Joseph (both will already be at TIFF presenting their feature length films) and Patrick Brice (from Creep and The Overnight) along with Sammy Harkham. Noteworthy female filmmakers include SXSW & Cannes-winning short from Pippa Bianco (see still of Share above) and Celia Rowlson-Hall who’ll next to featuring her debut feature Ma at the Venice Film Festival will have her previous short shown as well. MEMORY in collaboration with Medium Density Fibreboard Films (MDFF) present, “Program No.1”, an exclusive never before seen collection of 10 short films by emerging filmmakers from the US and Canada. This 90 minute one night only event consists of award winning films from festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, and SXSW, as well as exclusive premieres. Three of the directors featured in the program are premiering feature films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The program will be followed by an after party for the filmmakers and audience at Studio Bar (824 Dundas St. W) and with music by Toronto party rockers ITSOWEEZE deejay collective.

The program includes the following films:

THE REFLEKTOR TAPES “Porno” – Directed by Kahlil Joseph (EXCLUSIVE)
An theater specific excerpt from Joseph’s full length documentary THE REFLEKTOR TAPES, starring the Canadian band Arcade Fire, that is having its world premiere at TIFF 2015.

BROTHERS – Directed by Robert Eggers (World Premiere)
Robert Eggers first feature film THE WITCH which won the U.S Dramatic Competition Directing Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival will be having its Canadian premiere at TIFF 2015 as a Special Presentation. His short film Brothers is a world premiere.

CUTAWAY – Directed by Kazik Radwanski (EXCLUSIVE)
Toronto’s Kazik Raswanski’s award winning short film composed entirely of cutaways, ends it’s impressive festival run with this final theatrical screening. Kazik’s second feature film HOW HEAVY THIS HAMMER will be premiering at TIFF 2015.

SHARE – Directed by Pippa Bianco (EXCLUSIVE)
Pippa Bianco’s short film has won both the Cinéfondation award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and Special Jury Recognition at this years’ SXSW Film festival. Pippa was also recognized as 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine.

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL – Directed by Kevin Phillips (EXCLUSIVE)
Kevin Phillips, a Cinematographer turned Director, premiered his first narrative film at the Semaine De La Critique at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

A VIOLET DEATH – Director Isaiah Seret (World Premiere)
Known for his stylish and provocative Music Video work, Isaiah Seret directs this never before seen visual treat shot by famed Cinematographer Bradford Young (Last year’s TIFF selection PAWN SACRIFICE, SELMA, A MOST VIOLENT YEAR) on 35 mm film.

HANG LOOSE – Directed by Sammy Harkham & Patrick Brice (World Premiere)
Co-Director Sammy Harkham is an acclaimed and awarding winning graphic novelist, as well as the editor of the “Kramer’s Ergot” series, that is considered amongst most influential comic anthologies today. Co-Director Patrick Brice’s is the director of the indie comedy hit THE OVERNIGHT, as well as the found footage indie horror film CREEP.

Famed choreographer, Celia Rowlson-Hall was recently named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film and her first feature film MA is having its world premiere at the 2015 Venice Film Festival.

Eric Lavallée is the founder, CEO, editor-in-chief, film journalist, and critic at IONCINEMA.com, established in 2000. A regular at Sundance, Cannes, and Venice, Eric holds a BFA in film studies from the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. In 2013, he served on the narrative competition jury at the SXSW Film Festival. He was an associate producer on Mark Jackson’s "This Teacher" (2018 LA Film Festival, 2018 BFI London). In 2022, he was a New Flesh Juror for Best First Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival. His top films for 2023 include The Zone of Interest (Glazer), Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell (Pham Thien An), Totem (Lila Avilés), La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher), All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt (Raven Jackson). He is a Golden Globes Voter.
