Top 100 Most Anticipated American Indie Films of 2018: #88. Nia DaCosta’s Little Woods

Date:

Little Woods

With POTUS45 somewhat peeved with it’s neighbor to the north, Canada nonetheless remains a sanctuary and is more friend than foe especially when it comes to providing basic healthcare. Pitched as a modern western, Nia DaCosta‘s Kickstarter supported project was also aided by Sundance Screenwriter and Director labs back in 2015, the New York Film Festival, the San Francisco Film Society and the Time Warner Foundation. Little Woods promises to be a harrowing item and perhaps is carved into it, is a little Thelma & Louise spirit. Filming took place in January of 2017.

Spotful & IONCINEMA.com

This tells the story of two sisters, Ollie (Tessa Thompson) and Deb (Lily James), who are driven to work outside the law to better their lives. For years, Ollie has illicitly helped the struggling residents of her North Dakota oil boomtown access Canadian health care and medication. When the authorities catch on, she plans to abandon her crusade, only to be dragged in even deeper after a desperate plea for help from her sister. James Badge Dale, Luke Kirby and Lance Reddick are supporting players. Produced by Gabrielle Nadig (King Jack), this features a score from Krisha‘s (2017 AIFA winner) Brian McOmber and could play like a new Frozen River.

Release Date/Prediction: SXSW, Tribeca or Toronto, a North American preem would be in the cards with the high profile twosome.
