2022 TIFF: Peter Farrelly, Hong Sang-soo & Tobias Lindholm to World Premiere in Toronto

2022 TIFF: Peter Farrelly, Hong Sang-soo & Tobias Lindholm to World Premiere in Toronto

The fun part about dissecting TIFF’s Gala and Special Presentations unveiling are what titles are skipping TIFF, which titles are moving directly from Venice to Toronto, and which titles favored a Telluride splash. What we learned is that hotly anticipated projects in Peter Farrelly‘s The Greatest Beer Run Ever, Hong Sang-soo‘s Walk Up, Tobias Lindholm‘s The Good Nurse, Stephen WilliamsChevalier and Apple’s new acquisition in Lila Neugebauer‘s debut Causeway will have their world preems in Toronto. The alarming Venice-selected non-mentions today in Bardo (or False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths), White Noise, Blonde, TÁR, Bones and All and Monica could very-well be skipping Toronto altogether.

As expected, today’s press release contains loads of cream of the crop Cannes titles and while the latest from the Dardennes and Claire Denis have not been mentioned they’ll likely be part of the Masters section (usually due to the talent not shoring up), but one major title that could be a no-show is Lukas Dhont’s Close – are the A24 folks preparing a different strategy?

So how does Telluride mix up the cards? Cannes films not headed there and instead choosing Toronto appear to be Triangle of Sadness, Decision to Leave and Corsage. Venice titles not heading to Telluride include The Son, The Banshees Of Inisherin, The Whale and The Eternal Daughter. Cannes films that are indeed heading to Colorado include Holy Spider, One Fine Morning and Broker. World premiere titles in Telluride includes Empire of Light and The Wonder, but Sarah Polley’s Women Talking is listed as an International Premiere – which means it would be headed to Venice. Perhaps that pre-opening film that Alberto Barbera mentioned? We’ll attempt to clarify why it’s listed as such.

With a true buffet of world premieres unveiled today means a return to normal and a ton of guests — and there is so much more to add (e.g. Berlinale films Alcarras and Robe of Gems or a Wavelengths section showcasing of Albert Serra) to the 63 items identified today. Here are the Gala and Special Presentations:
