#67. Serge Gainsbourg, vie héroïque

Director/Writer: Joann Sfar
Producers: Marc Du Pontavice and Didier Lupfer
Distributor: Focus Features

The Gist: This is the story of a little Jewish boy who saunters about in a Paris occupied by the Germans; of a young, timid poet (Eric Elmosnino) who leaves behind his paintings and his room beneath the rooftops to dazzle nightclub crowds during the Swinging Sixties. It's a "heroic life" where the creatures of his mind become full-bodied on screen and his eloquence is a good match with his scandalous love affairs. From these elements arises a subversive work, with a loyal and rebellious citoyen as its star who stirs up the whole world until his death in 1991 at the age of 62.....(more)

Cast: Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta, Doug Jones, Mylène Jampanoï, Anna Mouglalis, Yolande Moreau, Sara Forestier and Philippe Katerine.

Why is it on the list?I'd be weary of such a nostalgic trip that covers mostly headline items of an artist's life, but graphic novelist Joann Sfar might bring a different sensibility and hopefully attempt to match the originality of the artist. The interesting cast begins with Eric Elmosnino - the spitting image of Gainsbourg and sadly, a posthumous perf from Lucy Gordon. Here's a look at Sfar's graphic novel.

Release Date/Status?: I was thinking a Berlin premiere since this will be released in February in France, but look for the total amount of box office to ultimately decide a future U.S release date. My thinking is anywhere from May-ish to September-ish.

My casting director suggested her and I went to Paris to meet her. She loved the script and she's an amazing actress so of course I wanted to work with her. Playing an artist is very hard as it can come of as super fake, but Elodie is an artist in real life and that translated. Who doesn't like Dream Life of Angels?!

Reviews

Review: Police, Adjective

Patterned with minimalist surroundings, low-key performances and long takes that are filmed in real time, the almost mute Police, Adjective cleverly details how Romanian society has not entirely deposed of, or moved away from its past with this anti-thesis of a Michael Mann film.

Interviews

Interview: Actress Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

I wanted to change my body. I wanted to be a little bit more masculine and get rid of my female body. I wanted to be more like a boy. I wanted to be able to do all the fighting scenes, so I wanted to go into martial arts training. I trained a lot in Thai boxing and kickboxing with this crazy Serbian guy five days a week. I did a lot of preparation, and I also took motorcycle driving lessons, and I cut my hair and pierced myself.
