2018 Cannes: Ciro Guerra, Gaspar Noé, Romain Gavras, Jaime Rosales & Debra Granik Fill Directors’ Fortnight

Date:

Heavy on Spanish language films (including a Brazilian film not in its mother tongue) and the usual block of French film items, after seven years as Artistic Director, Edouard Waintrop leaves the Directors’ Fortnight (the section that gave us The Florida Project and a Claire Denis comedy in 2017) with what appears to be a program of genre-friendly firecracker line-up items.

Opening with Ciro Guerra & Cristina Gallego‘s Birds of Passage, (#71 on our Most Anticipated list) we have Julio Hernández Cordón‘s Buy Me a Gun which is being called a mix of Peter Pan and Mad Max. We have the return of Jaime Rosales (his third trip to Cannes) with Petra which is being called a must see cruel portrait.

Among the French items we have Gaspar Noé‘s Climax (formerly known as Psyché) to look forward to and Les Confins du monde by Guillaume Nicloux (#81 on our Most Anticipated list) is being called an Apocalypse Now for its regional focus – this is Nicloux’s third feature in a row to feature Gerard Depardieu. We have Romain GavrasLe monde est à toi which stars Karim Leklou, Vincent Cassel and Isabelle Adjani in roles we’ve never quite seen them in.

From Asia, Sixth Generation filmmaker Zhang Ming‘s The Pluto Moment might be a truly indie film worth seeking out, and they bring anime helmer from Mamoru Hosoda with Mirai (being repped by Wild Bunch), while from the U.S we find Sundance carry-overs in Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy and Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace. Here is the full line-up:
