It’s that time of year again where Euro titles from Venice of the previous year duke it out with Euro Cannes film productions of the current year. Add some winners and faves from (mostly) Sundance and Berlin and we’ve got the first short list of the The European Film Awards. This year the ceremony takes place on December 10th in Reykjavík, Iceland, and of the 30 mentioned today, the next wave will dwindle down to half the offerings. Th first official screening must have taken place between June 1st 2021 and May 31st and have a European director. Last year the big winner was Quo Vadis, Aida?. Of the big titles we find in the first wave we got the Berlinale winner Alcarràs, the Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness and Marie Kreutzer’s Corsage which certainly feels like a shoe-in for Best Actress. Eric Lavallée is the founder, CEO, editor-in-chief, film journalist and critic at IONCINEMA.com (founded in 2000). Eric is a regular at Sundance, Cannes and TIFF. He has a BFA in Film Studies at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema. In 2013 he served as a Narrative Competition Jury Member at the SXSW Film Festival. He was an associate producer on Mark Jackson's This Teacher (2018 LA Film Festival, 2018 BFI London). In 2022 he served as a New Flesh Comp for Best First Feature at the 2022 Fantasia Intl.
